Tempe:
The city of Tempe, named
after the Vale of Tempe in Greece, began as a milling company
just across the Salt River from the settlement of Phoenix.
Hayden’s Ferry was created in the 1870’s to transport people and
goods across the river to the settlement. Modern Tempe is much
more than a mill and river crossing. The thriving city of Tempe
is home to Arizona State University, art galleries and museums,
sporting arenas, golf courses and the picturesque two-mile Tempe
Town Lake.
